Kama Sutra comprises a lavish, voluptuous story belonging to 16th century India about a servant girl called Maya (Indira Varma) as the heroine, who has been subservient to Princess Tara (Sarita Choudhury), her childhood friend. When Tara is pledged to Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews), the king, Maya accesses his chamber in the night prior to the marriage and seduces him after which she taunts her competitor. The bitter Tara exiles Maya from the village and she becomes associated with a sculptor, Jai Kumar (Ramon Tikaram) and becomes his beloved and model, until he chooses her to be his model.

She then meets an older woman named Rasa Devi (Rekha), an instructor of the Kama Sutra, the primitive art of seduction and love making. Maya eventually gains proficiency as a courtesan, and goes back to the royal court, and gets intimate with the king who comes to know of her love for Jai and executes him, with Maya finally obtaining spiritual freedom.
